We reached Gibraltar about 3:00, siesta again. We parked in Spain and walked across the border. Gibraltar shares its north border with Cadiz, however it is a British Overseas Territory, ceded to Britain in 1713 in perpetuity under the Treaty of Utrecht.
The sides of the rock are steep and pretty bleak. It’s very interesting to see all the holes at various levels for cannons and lookouts, suggesting a maze of tunnels for access.
Far more enjoyable were the apes invading dumpsters. The apes are Barbary macaques; they are the only wild apes or monkeys in Europe and they are on the endangered list. They kept an eye on us but we weren’t much of a deterrent to their quest for food. What a mess they made. The apes sit on the edge of a dumpster and dig around looking for food. The non-food ends up on the ground adding to the filth.
