Guadix, loosely translated, means ‘River of Life’, rivaled Granada with its poetry and bards in earlier days. We came to see the cave dwellings.
Ten thousand people, roughly half the population of Guadix, live in caves and take advantage of the constant 20 C temperature. Some of the caves have been fixed up as second homes for city dwellers and some are mere hovels with a curtain for a front door. Churches, bars, and shopping are all found in caves in the harsh eroded hillside. It was still siesta when we arrived, not many people were about but the Guadix Cueva Museo de Costumbres Populares (cave museum) was open.
