There are so many cathedrals in France that they seem to run together. I selected several that I feel are significant to art history, Notre Dame in Paris, Reims, a day trip from Paris and Chartres, Rouen and Bayeux in Normandy. The towns were as much a pleasure as seeing the art and Gothic architecture.
I took the morning train to Reims. The center of town is somewhat small and very old. I enjoyed wandering without fear of getting turned around like I did in St-Germain-en-Laye. I have begun my art with images that show the character and beauty of the town.
My favorite image is of two friends and their companions greeting on the street in the early afternoon.
Chartres is very famous so I thought the crowds might be a problem, after Paris, it felt empty! There are many facets that I can’t wait to render but first I was drawn to the town.
The neighborhood below the cathedral has a canal flowing through it. The reflections were marvelous that day.
We went to Bayeux to see the Bayeux Tapestries. No photography allowed….
