This is another image from my neighborhood. One afternoon, when Daisy and I were on the way back home, we walked past a dumpster with these chairs sitting next to it. They look like they are talking to each other; at least the one in the foreground is running its mouth! I painted this picture with only 4 colored pencils; cyan, yellow, magenta, and indigo. Using only the 4 pencils makes me focus on the nuances of a color and the colors are much richer.
My kids are starting to leave home and having an empty nest has been pressing on my mind. I found this nest in Lisbon on the first day of my trip to Spain with my daughter. It resonated with me, she was finishing up her master’s degree and stepping out to begin her adult life starting me off on my empty nest phase. My fascination with nests shifted gears from fairy homes to the symbolic icon of the later phase of parenthood.
Bird’s nest are amazing, they are so intricately woven by such tiny creatures and often used for only one season! We have some nests on my porch that get reused each year; we have a cardinal, a chickadee, and a wren living there.
