In August of 2009, my daughter’s boyfriend (now my son-in-law) invited us on vacation with them. Jimmy was riding in the Leadville 100, a 100 mile bike race in Leadville, CO. We stayed in a lovely house near Breckenridge, at about 10,000 ft. I struggled to breathe just walking across the bedroom floor! I’ve never been anywhere that had oxygen bars….
We spent most of our time outdoors hiking. My children accused me of lollygagging when we were in the higher altitudes. Of course I was able to catch my breath when I stopped to take pictures but there was also a lot to take pictures of!
I’ve been interested in the shapes of old trees for a long time but I saw them with new eyes in Colorado. I named this image Br’er Rabbit or Br’er Fox? There is a good argument for either – I’ll let you decide.
The town of Leadville, CO is very small. It was a mining town and now the inhabitants make their living from tourists that come for the 100 mile bike race and the 100 mile run. There is a lovely hike that wanders through an area of mines. I enjoyed photographing the mines, each was very different. I also found the vegetation full of surprises. This stump caught my eye, it looks like a hedgehog peeking out at us.
